4th place: Faraz3d Batman (Desert Storm)
This is a masterpiece. The armor design is great and you can tell Faraz3d put a lot of thought and love into this Model. It actually looks like something that would fit in a Christopher Nolan Batman Film. Fantastic work! I really like it. |
 |
5th place: Crazyfool Superman.
What a great model. He really captured Alex Ross's style. He feels old and grizzled, and yet still gets up to shave every morning, as if Norman Rockwell were to make a super man. Crazyfool nailed it. |

Listed in Alphabetical Order (last name first)

Pascal Blanche - Art Director 每 Ubisoft Entertainment
1st place - Spiderman by Morte
| |
Number one for me. Everything, from the quality of the modelling, to the pose, the rendering, shaders, lighting and post effects makes me forget about the cg aspect of the creation. What I see is a stunning cover, a beautiful work that is truly respectful to the character and the comic book it represents. Bravo! |
2nd place - Lorna by Ballo
| |
What I love about this one is the successful cartoon-like style portrayed in the model's proportions. The face and body are nicely done with tons of attention given to careful details. The whole general aspect of the character is really powerful and catches the eye. Nice! |
3rd place - Red Hulk By Maxter
| |
Nice rendition on this red angry nemesis of the famous green giant... I really enjoy the work done on his facial expression that are filled with rage and anger. Muscle details are nice, pose and post effects too. |
4th place - Judge death by ez5k
| |
Good work on trying to catch the Simon Bisley's version of Judge death here... There is good work done on elements and lighting. I can almost hear myself saying: "crime iss life, the sssentenccce iss deathhh!" |
5th place - Remy Lebeau by euge
| |
What I love in this work is the great sense of composition and pose. There is a nice feel of action here, and the overall picture gives a nice sense of a comic book feeling, almost in a Travis Charest's way.. which is a good thing ;) |

| |
This model is so amazing. The face, personality, style, colors, and especially, the presentation, are all well balanced to showcase a splendid final character. Well done Ballo! |
2nd place - Batman (DesertStrom) by Faraz3d
| |
This piece is extremely well constructed. The overlapping body armor plates, together with a grim and serious facial expression, makes for a great personality that is instantly eye catching. Well done! |
3rd place - Judge Death by ez5k
| |
This piece is a brilliant showcase of the character it represents. The colors, crispness of the render, stellar pose# everything simply makes sense. I wouldn*t mind have a 3d print of this character on my table. Congrats for an amazing job! |
4th place - Scarecrow by Maph
| |
An awesome presentation together with an awesome idea, this creator pulled off a fabulous piece. The pose is perfect and it really expresses a mood. The striped trousers is a bonus! |
5th place - harleyquinn by Duncan Fraser
| |
The artist here opts for a miniature version of the real character# and it is done exceptionally well. There is tons of character to this little girl and it portrays the real character with justice. Very touching, moody, catchy, and brilliantly executed. Excellent! |

1st place - Lorno by Ballo
| |
This model is so amazing. The face, personality, style, colors, and especially, the presentation, are all well balanced to showcase a splendid final character. Well done Ballo! |
2nd place - Batman (DesertStrom) by Faraz3d
| |
Well done character. The face balances well with the body and the armor*s style and color balance very well. One thing that could have enhanced this model was an even distribution of details/attention. The face looked more worked on then the lower part of the body, especially the feet. |
3rd place - Scarecrow by Maph
| |
Really good presentation. The face could have used a little more expression - perhaps a bigger smile. However, everything else was done to perfection. Well Done Maph! |
4th place - harleyquinn by Duncan Fraser
| |
Textures, mood, personality, lighting, presentation 每 Excellent! Only thing missing to place higher, would be a normal map to make it pop out even more. |
5th place - Judge Death by ez5k
| |
No diffuse colors on clothing, it is simply filled with one color. Making it pale as the original concept was not entirely needed. Some additional elementary colors could have made the clothing a little more real. This aside, modeling, technique, and style were fantastic! Great Job! |

Jeremy [foreverendering] Gritton - 3rd Place DW IV 3D World Champion - Blizzard
Judging for Comicon was a challenge in and of itself - there were numerous fantastic entries each with their own style and merits. Obviously any choices I made were skewed toward my own tastes, but I did my best to be objective and give equal consideration to stylized vs realistic, and literal translation vs redesign.
Congratulations to the finalists, and to all artists who were able to finish their entries.
There were many more entries that I enjoyed beyond those listed here, there just isn't enough space to give so many artists the credit they deserve. It was my pleasure to view and be inspired by the following entries (and many more)
1st place - Lorna - Ballo
| |
Wow! Incredible sense of style and color in this entry. Pulling off a sexy female character with such exaggerated proportions takes incredible precision and skill. One misstep and it could easily look awkward or forced. The result, instead, is exceptional. You took a risk with this entry, and in my opinion, it paid off.
Beautiful transition from the 2d concept to a fully realized game model. Technically, all the work is very clean and the presentation is cohesive and professional throughout all the images. Congratulations! |
2nd place - Judge Death by ez5k
| |
Easily the most difficult entry to place. This is an awesome artisitic accomplishment and I wish I could give both ballo and ez5k a first place vote. The beauty shot is phenomenal. Great execution from start to finish, even the pedestal is polished - great attention to detail with the bones and skull embedded in the sediment.
The character itself is detailed yet readable, has a great silhouette, and is a perfect translation from the 2d reference. The presentation is clean and consistent. Congratulations ez5k!
|
3rd place - The Hulk by Maddam
| |
Stunning work, maddam! The feeling of brute strength in this rendition of the Hulk is palpable. Sculpting proficiency and anatomical knowledge are on full display here. I really enjoy the strong green palette used in the the first two shots - it makes for a very eye-catching presentation. Overall, the work is very clean and well executed.
The only minor nit-pick I could come up with is that the UV layout, while functional, could be slightly more optimal. In all though, a tremendous achievement. Great job, maddam. |
4th place - harleyquinn by Duncan Fraser
| |
Such an awesome take on a well-known character - extra points for the updated design. There is a strong sense of style here, playfulness mixed with a gruesome undertone. Great pose and presentation - this entry was a real treat to view from start to finish. While not as complex from a modeling standpoint as some of the other entries, I thought the end result was fantastic and deserved to be recognized. |
5th place - Ghost by PanicK
| |
I'm not familiar with this character, but this piece does a great job of evoking an emotion (namely creepiness). There is just something off-putting about this entry. Maybe it's the grays that dominate the palette; maybe it's the poses. Whatever it is - it's working. Combine that with technically sound work, an accurate representation of the reference, and clean presentation, and this entry deserves a spot in the top 5. Well done! |
6th place - Batman(DesertStrom) by Faraz3d
| |
Excellent hard-surface modeling for this entry. Batman - Desert Storm is a great technical achievement. Every aspect of this character has been done at a high level - the transition from high to low poly is flawless.
If I have to nit-pick: I think incorporating desert camouflage into the suit was a cool idea for a batman variation, but something about the boxiness of the camo pattern makes it feel like texture artifacts, or that it is lower res than it really is. However, this a minor issue for what I think is a high quality model. Very impressive work. |

7th place - Lobster Johnson by h2olt
| |
Another character I haven't seen before - maybe I should read more comics :) This entry is just solid from top to bottom. Well sculpted, clean textures, interesting pose, an accurate depiction of the reference - this one makes me want to learn more about the character. Great work, h2olt. |
8th place - Scarecrow by maph
| |
Probably the highest quality beauty render of the competition. Great lighting, pose, colors, and framing. It created a lasting first impression and is the main reason I chose this piece. I really enjoy the fun, stylized take on Scarecrow and the silhouette is fantastic. Nice touch with the Hangman's Knot being used as a necklace. This one has a fun Jack Skellington type of feel. Overall a great piece and easily one of my favorites. |
9th place - The Clown by Grush
| |
As a fan of the Spawn franchise, this was a really fun one to see. Awesome sculpting on the Clown's face here - the image of the high poly head in the Construction shot is sick! The back of the jacket is really nice as well, but beyond that, the rest of the body can't quite hold up to the incredible quality attained on the head. As a final note, really nice materials and lighting (particularly in the Beauty shot) |
10th place - The Magdalena by kotter
| |
Impressive. This character is filled with details and multiple points of asymmetry - it's obvious a lot of work went into this piece. Clean work, clean presentation, good use of color, and expertly packed texture sheets are a winning combo for this entry. |
11th place - Saber Alter by valleyrain
| |
While I'm not familiar with the character reference, the end result is striking. The harsh contrast used in this entry works in its favor by drawing the eye to the face. The glowing red design on the sword gives the character just the right dab of color to keep it from feeling monochromatic.
At first glance, the clothing feels plain black - but on closer inspection there is a distinction between the dark gray armor, purple cloth, deep red blood stains, and chipped edges of the metal plates. It's the attention to subtle details in this piece that, for me, make it a strong game character. Well done.
|
12th place - Dr Octopus by Diego Maia
| |
Awesome Steampunk redesign on Doc Ock. While I do think the materials and lighting could be improved upon, this one gets bonus points for the creativity and great modeling / design work. I would have liked to see this character with a green/orange color scheme to give him another tie-in to the original, but that is a small caveat. This is a clever idea with a solid follow through. I'd love to read a comic with Batman and Doc Ock in a steampunk setting. |
13th place - Wasp by Sirt Gazington
| |
Awesome materials - the specularity in the suit really does wonders. This doesn't feel like a game character which is high praise. Creative pedestal in the Beauty shot, which I enjoyed. I found the hair & wings to both be done very successfully. Nice sculpting on the high poly. |
14th place - MR.FREEZE by onelung
| |
Excellent redesign. Love the proportions. Only the lighting/rendering gave me pause since it flattens out an otherwise awesome creation. The high poly feels so beautifully 3 dimensional; it just pops off the screen and I wish the low poly did as well.
In terms of creatively updating the design of an existing comic character, this is definitely one of the most successful. The colors give this entry an accurately chilly feeling, and the pedestal is a creative addition. One final note - Masterful UV packing!
|
15th place - Mojo by superostrich
| |
The expression in Mojo's face is by far the high point of the character. Awesome work there. Great sense of proportion - the sculpting for the body is perfect. I would have liked to have seen more attention to detail in the mechanical parts of the character, to bring them up to the same quality level as the organics. In all, a great rendition of Mojo. |

HONORABLE MENTIONS (In no particular order)
All these artists did such a good job that I wanted to quickly list them :
wieslaw: A well-done piece. I like the sense of speed the pose in the Beauty Shot has captured. The cloth modeling in the high-poly has translated well in the bakes.
jacquechoi : Such an interesting character with a clean, crisp texturing style. With stronger lighting and rendering, this certainly could have placed in my rankings. Currently the renders feel very 2-dimensional, which may have been the artist's intent given the subject matter of the contest.
rottensword : Great take on Spawn. Awesome work on capturing the feel of the cape. For me, the painted effects in the Beauty Shot detract from an otherwise well done model.
samarvijay : Really cool Wolverine model - the only thing throwing me off is the hair. Overall though, great job - I find the pants to be particularly impressive.
cgsammu : Amazing 2-for-1 entry that clocks in well below budget. Creative use of UV's and textures. The specularity in this piece is awesome. Great job on the gooey strands running between the appendages.
crazyfool & obi_one : Two great Superman renditions (for differing reasons) - it was impossible to choose between them. Good job to both of you.

Jian [masterkey] Guan - 9th Place DW IV 3D World Champion
1st place - Lorna by Ballo
| |
Very unique style. The color choices are outstanding! Enchanting expression with a very hot pose. Everything about her is extraordinary. Very impressive work! |
2nd place - Scarecrow by Maph
| |
An intimidating scarecrow holding special weapons of death, a hint of power suggested by a glimpse of a dark and foreboding eye. I like this piece a lot, especially the modelling. |
3rd place - Lobster Johnson by h2olt
| |
I really like this character*s posture and the presentation is done exceedingly well. Light control is very good, which makes for a very strong final portrayal. Excellent work! |
4th place - Judge Death by ez5k
| |
Very good light and rich details. I was attracted by each facet of this character*s creation 每 presentation, modelling, texturing, style, pose, personality and more! Very shocking work! |
5th place -Wolverine by samar vijay
| |
Haha, this is an interesting little villain - mischief and mayhem. Everything is so interesting. I like the black and white case floor and the clown's dress. Nice work! |

Tony [Sadoshi] Tsang - 8th Place DW IV 3D World Champion - SK
1st place - Batman(DesertStrom) by Faraz3d
| |
This is an outstanding piece of work. While the concept and the idea aren*t extraordinary, the execution of this DesertStrom Batman takes this character to an extraordinary level. A super clean model with all the detail in right place combine with a beautiful texture job, Fraaz3d has done a tremendous job in recapturing this Modern Day Dark Knight. |
2nd place - Wasp by Sirt Gazington
| |
This is a really polish piece and is presented very well. Sirt Gazington did a tremendous job rendering and presenting this character. The expression on Wasp*s face and the flexing of her arm while standing on Guinness bottle cap adds so much character to a very simple model. The clean and slick composition and design also help with the presentation of a beautiful executed character. |
3rd place - Lorna by Ballo
| |
What really makes this piece stands out is how well Lorna is stylized. One of the hardest things to do in 3d is exaggerating proportions and building character without making it awkward and Ballo did a great job executing just that. I really enjoy the hand painted look on the texture especially the subtle treatment that gives Lorna the comic book plastic look. |
4th place - HarleyQuinn by Duncan Frazer
| |
This overly simplified portrayal of Harley Quinn speaks of menace and fun, conveniently those are both are her characteristic. I really enjoy looking at this piece because it has a great mood and style. Duncan Frazer did an amazing job with the presentation of this chibi character; the model is very simple yet it captured all the essences of a psychopathic menace. This is a perfect example of the saying ※less is more.§ |
5th place - Scarecrow by Maph
| |
This is another excellent portrayal of a well-established character. The stylization and the execution of Scarecrow are excellent. Maph did a beautiful job with both the model and the texture of the character. There is a great attention to detail and everything is exactly where its need to be. This Nightmare Before Christmas take on Scarecrow adds so much fun and character to this infamous comic book villain. |

Listed in Alphabetical Order (last name first)

Meinert Hansen - Concept Artist 每 300 (the Movie)
1st place - Cat Woman by Sidartxa
| |
Here is a fine example of a complete illustration - one that is not only well composed and rendered, but also has dramatic storytelling contained in a single image. A strong pose from the main character is highlighted and well-balanced by not only the background motifs, but the way the lights and darks all subtly point to the central focus. There are also lovely studies of costume details in the development sketches, and the watercolor study of the main character is simple and clear. Well done! |
2nd place - Spawn by JeffMD
| |
A close second, here is an illustration filled with all the classic elements of a hero pose. What makes this one stand out is not only the craftsmanship of the painting technique, but the strong swirling movement of line, and balance of colors and shapes. The rendering has just the right energetic brush strokes of tight and loose, with tastefully placed accents of light. The studies for the character and painting process demonstrate the artist's understanding of anatomy and tonal values. |
3rd place - Doctor Doom by brianh
| |
This excellent presentation pose and design demonstrates a clear understanding of the genre, as well as a strong cinematic sensibility. Very dynamic composition, solid, consistent costume design and good color values. I especially like the greyscale thumbnail studies for the composition. Every one of those panels would have made an excellent illustration! |
4th place - Ghostbuster by Niconoff
| |
Here is a fun take on the Ghosbusters theme. The confident rendering of the final image is bold, clear and consistent. Imaginative costume and mechanical designs, as well as a unique way of presenting the process sketches. |
5th place - Hobgoblin by mariankiller
| |
In stark contrast to the other entries, here is a render which falls back to the flat colors of traditional comic book panels. What makes this one stand out is the artist's distinct loose rendering style. A solid, original character design, a very dramatic composition and just the right balance of pose and colors makes this stylistic rendering a perfect match to the comic book genre. I would like to see an entire comic rendered in this style. |

Fedor [FedDark] Losev - 14th Place DW IV 2D World Champion
1st place - Bane by d1sk
| |
This is a perfect character design sheet and perfect final illustration in the same style! It has well balanced proportions so there is a real solid silhouette. The atmosphere, mood, environment gradients and the moon, are all reflected on the character and clouds, making for a very stylish piece. Well done! |
2nd place - Spawn by Jeff MD
| |
This is probably the best single picture in the challenge! Excellent presentation of Spawn represented in a fantasy world! Wolf collar is successful done! Soft warm fantasy colors and perfect composition! But, it fell down to 2nd place because, unfortunately, the modelling sheet could have been a bit better. |
3rd place - Ghostbuster by Niconoff
| |
Author used a steampunk style to portray this marvelous Ghostbuster piece. It was a very nice move to create Ghostbusters in a retro world! Stylish devices, nice colors and final render 每 all very good! |
4th place - Doctor Doom by brian_h
| |
I love the balanced details in the simple shapes. Many tech details look like they are not entirely cyborg, because the cape gives us a sense of a human carrying implants. Somewhat laconic nice composition, nice colors.. nice work! |
5th place - HULK the pirate by Diissar
| |
Hulk the pirate is fun! Nice positive colors, and a dynamic and a bit cartoony style - this made for a great impression! |

Minoh [MikiNohm] Kim - Concept Artist - 38 Studios
1st place - Doctor Doom by brian_h
| |
Very interesting Doom with a retro automaton look. The final art is simple but sets a very sinister and cold mood. It feels like a 60's sci-fi movie poster. Great work! |
2nd place - Bane of Frankenstein by dwinbotp
| |
Great idea here. It's still very recognizable as Bane, with the addition of some stitches and small changes to his gear. Good twist to a popular character and a nice drawing. |
3rd place - Medieval Batman by Jaaachu
| |
The idea of Batman being a different kind of caped "crusader" is pretty cool. Something about the drawing just sparks my imagination with alternate timeline Batman stories. Good stuff. |
4th place - superman cañí by Lehar
| |
For real? The idea of Superman as a matador, facing off against a giant Kryptonite Minotaur is pretty out there. But it's very, very cool! I love the stylized drawing too. |
5th place - Ghostbuster by Niconoff
| |
A steampunk ghostbuster is pretty neat. I love how his gear is so big that it needs a wheel to support it! LOL. Nice touch with the noose on the ghost. Fun final art. |

1st place - Spawn by Jeff MD
| |
Beautiful palette, gorgeous lighting, and just an incredible amount of energy in this painting! The very thorough modeling sheet is just icing on the cake. |
2nd place - Medieval Batman by Jaaachu
| |
I just love this design! The mash-up of medieval elements and unmistakable Batman iconography work so well together in this concept, and there's an elegent simplicity to the illustration itself. |
3rd place - Bane by d1sk
| |
A very solidly realized character, and an excellent model sheet. The lighting and colors in the painting are superb! |
4th place - Predator by Rayph
| |
Beautiful painting and a very comprehensive design. |
5th place - Doctor Doom by brian_h
| |
Wonderful job of moving this famous Marvel bad-guy into a more futuristic setting. Von Doom has lost a bit of his personality and recognizability with the new mask design, but overall this is a very well-realized design. |
6th place - Poison Ivy by Samson Brown
| |
My favorite character rendition in the entire Challenge. The face shots and body poses are wonderful! More attention to the background and a model sheet more suited to helping an artist model the character would have helped this entry score higher in my book. |

Michele [deadred] Chang - 8th Place DW IV 2D World Champion
It was a great pleasure viewing all the entries for this year's Comicon but that also gave me a very difficult time narrowing down my top favorites! I've decided to make this my main criteria for choosing one entry over another: if I saw all these characters on the covers of a shelf of comicbooks, which would catch my attention first?

1st place - Bane by d1sk
| |
Beautiful color coordination and superb composition made this entry leave the biggest first impression on me. The moment I saw this character, my interest was instantly captured and the longer I look at the image, the more cool little details I found, like the bat logo in the flames, the way his veins are shown pumped to the bursting point with Venom, and how his overall character design is portrayed to be believably functional. What I love best is how all of this is presented with a vibrant comic book feel, and how every cool detail is visible, yet there is depth to the scene and the composition is done well enough that it does not look messy. The focal point of the image is his raging face despite how small it is, compared to the rest of him; very nicely done! The concept sheet has also some interesting action poses that give a good idea of how cool the character looks while he's doing his thang. |
2nd place - Predator- redux by Rayph
| |
Predator designs usually look more or less the same, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well this character is executed and it was an instant-win to me when I saw this entry. The way the character blends in with his environment (as he should!) while still readable against it, is masterfully done. I'm also impressed by the character design, especially the extras shown in the beautiful model sheet. It's a very good reiteration of the original designs, yet still unmistakably Predator. |
3rd place - Catwoman by Sidxartxa

This is a very creative take on Catwoman. The ideas for her concept completely won me over despite the modeling sheet looking rushed and unfinished, compared to the final illustration and the amazing concept sheet. Her Hello Kitty tattoo is a nice humorous addition too! I love how her clothing and accessories make her fit right in to the era depicted in the final illustration. There's a story element conveyed as well, and it makes it very interesting to look at. |

The rendering for this piece is masterful, despite the wildly deformed anatomy and what looks like lotion-smooth skin! A fun take on this character for sure, although I wish there was more about his environment that shows the universe he's placed in. Oh, and I like his pants. |

I really like this entry very much. The composition is iconic, the choice of colors is unusual and interesting, and the text at the bottom would make this an awesome poster to have! His equipment design is also cool. I think a slightly sharper contrast to the character's rendering would make him more eye-catching in his glamour shot pose. |
