Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - maddam - old link
This is great, I just love the look of this character. I love the proportions and the overall treatment. It feels like a breath of fresh air, very different and it really stands out from the rest. I picked this for 1st place because I thought it was a very original approach, it was very well crafted and there was a sense of style to it that really made it stand out. There isn't anything that isn't awesome about this entry, sculpting, lowpoly, uvs, presentation - all awesome. I also really love the colors and the way details are peppered in there in specific areas and not everywhere to keep it from looking overly busy.

2nd - erigo - lobo
This guy is awesome. Technically - really well done in every area and it¡¯s just oozing with character. Out and out bad mofo, hell what else do you need? :) I picked it as 2nd place because while it is absolutely very well made, and there's really nothing to choose from between this guy and my number one pick, it just looks like something we've seen before.

3rd - jocz - batman
I love all the detailing and the surface treatment on this one. It¡¯s a super cool take on batman, I really dig it. I picked it as 3rd place because it just wasn't quite as punchy as the top 2 entries, I think its great and its something I would like to have as a sculpt sitting on my desk, but as a character it didn't quite excite me as the top 2. Also, I wish the spec and detailing got toned down on a few areas to really showcase the important stuff.

4th - jaco - catwoman
This one is very very cool, simple and effective, it¡¯s detailed but the details aren't distracting. I picked it as 4th because while I felt it was very sexy and well made it just wasn't as impressive as the top 3 entries, also a cooler pose and presentation (something more along the lines of what you see in the covers that were used for reference) would definitely sell it much better.

5th - lilith - hit girl
I really liked this entry, it¡¯s really well done. It doesn't quite have the punch of some of the other entries, but its still super cool and very well made. I picked it as 5th because I think it belongs here with the best entries, it¡¯s just not quite as cool as the ones listed above.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
Jocelyn Zeller - "Jocz" - Blind Batman
If we were playing baseball then this would definitely be a grand slam! A refreshing take on a very popular character that shows a sense of wisdom and clarity instead of the usual brooding menace. This is one I will remember for a long time. Congratulations Jocelyn.

Damien Canerle - "maddam" - Old Link
If I could give a tie for 1st place then it would go to Damien's Link submission. Beautiful, rich detail and a wonderfully crafted visage give Link a wordly experience that has yet to be created, until now. The fantasy genre has a new king and his name is Link.

Yaroslav Grigorash  - "Erigo" - Lobo
As tough as a razor blade suppository! This character has franchise written all over him. Beautiful concept art caught my eye at the start of this comp and I have kept watching ever since. Excellent work Yaroslav.

Lubov Sokolina - "Lilith" - Hit-Girl
The little girly sociopath we fell in love with has grown up to be quite a woman and Lubov should be proud of the submission. An extremely pretty face and attention to detail has really pushed this character above all others.

Sam Yang  - " cg-sammu " - Ms Marvel
What a stunner! 360 degrees of beauty. I would have tied this with Hit-Girl had there been some type of visible age progression or regression. Honorary Award for Best Hair. Very Charlie's Angels. Well done Sam.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:

1st - maddam / Old Link
Is awarded the exalted first place due to it not only being awesome game art, but the character I would most want to play as. I'm a huge fan of the chunkier stylization and the grittier texture work. Love the face. Great material treatment, and nice clean deformable typology. He didn't throw a comic book cover up with his concept, but he did follow the base of the challenge and change the age, so they cancelled each other out, IMO. There are issues with beard seems and clipping which almost took it down a few pegs for me, but the fact that it still won my #1 should speak volumes to the overall pieces success. Congrats to Damien on a stellar piece. I wish Nintendo would push forward with this style.

2nd - Erig / Lobo
Claims the coveted 2nd spot due to extreme awesomeness and hail to the hay day of quake. It's great seeing him transferred into such a different style, while still keeping the essence and easily knowing that this is Lobo. Very nice work on the sculpt, textures, and materials. This guy is detailed to the max without being overly noisy. Your typology and use of geometry pushed you into the #2 spot. The big gun feels a little lowrez in the beauty shot, especially when compared to his face. It tends to happen when trying to get a ton of accessories and varying texture work on one 2048 sheet, but I think the extra accessories are worth it. Might have been nice to try and get a little more color variation between the straps, pants, boots, and knee pads, but I can understand the challenge when the character is a white guy that wears all black. Excellent job Yaroslav. Truly a character that deserves to be running around blasting and curb stomping heads.

3rd - jocz/ Blind Batman
Stealing 3rd is a new creation, Blind Batman! I love it when someone takes their own spin with a character, not to mention executes it so damn well. The sculpt and typology are nice, but the texture and material work just made this guy phenomenal. The designs are crazy unique, but still firmly grounded due to the materials. The back cape drapery looks great, and nice work on the engines, though the metal thorax between them feels a tad plain compared to everything else. Dig the little flying eyes, and again the little engines help ground them from feeling too overly sci-fi. Congrats Jocelyn on an entry I can't say enough nice things about, and thank you for taking a chance and giving us a new awesome take on a classic.

4th - Neox/ Teen Storm
Clinching 4th is Neox's great take on Teen Storm. This is easily my favority beauty shot, and has found its home on my desktop. You did a great job transforming Storm to her younger state, and the callout to the comic's old mohawk is what makes her "feel" like Storm. Great job on the sculpt (great face), textures, materials, and especially the hair. I felt your typology could have used a little lovin in the thigh pelvic region, along with the back of the pants above the butt, which would minimize the back of the pants/belt loop area from stretching upon pose. Excellent job Steffen. It's hard to place so high, with a realist version of something especially when it's surrounded by so many stylized entries. You definitely deserve it.

5th - Arkhange / Luffy
Finishing out the top 5 is a character I had never heard of before "Luffy". This is a great transformation from the comic into an older version that could meld right into Street Fighter 4. Nice design, and the beauty shot really sells it. The pallet was refreshing in this competition of black and whites. Some of the fold work feels inconsistent, the crotch has a whole lot of tension when compared to everything else, which tends to bring your eye back to the crotch... which isn't usually ideal. The rope belt ends get that harsh black around the tips which could be softened with using a brown, or adding alpha. A few small things, but this character still captures my eye every time I go through the entries. Congrats Ange on a really awesome interpretation and for making the top 5!

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - Link - Maddam
One of the best renditions of the character I've seen. No crits, love everything about it.

2nd - Hit Girl - Lilith
Love the design. Excellent model, the proportions and silhouette are perfect. Would've loved to see you put a bit more work into the textures/shader, spec could use more variation, she's coming off a bit plastic.

3rd - Harley Quinn - NikitaNV
Gorgeous model & textures, love what you did with the spec. The beauty shot is very impressive, great pose, very realistic, looks like a high-poly model. I like how faithful you stayed to the original design, while still adding those extra details and flourishes.

4th - Batman - Jocz
Extremely impressed with the design and the hi-poly, very fresh & unique style. Really love the direction you took the character.

5th - Lobo - Erigo
Really like the hi-poly, great style. Not instantly recognizable as Lobo though imo. The rifle looks very generic sci-fi, would've been a nice touch if you could have included his trademark chain/hook instead.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - Erigo - Lobo
Awesome design, really complex character and great execution! Also, great job on the forums. I was watching it since the beginning of the challenge. Final image could be a little better but awesome work overall, congrats!

2nd - NikitaNV - Harley Quinn
Really strong model, I was confused about the first places and i was taking as a priority the new concept art and age changing, but this model is so awesome, great execution! Great poses, beautiful face, really impressive textures and nice presentation! No critiques overall, if i would point out something is just for you pay more attention to her eyes specular and teeth. Congrats!

3rd - jocz - Blind Batman
Great high res model! Love the design but his face doesn't represent "batman" for me and final pose was a little simple. Really impressive design and execution. Cheers!

4th - Neox - teen Storm
Great choice and presentation! Final model have a few issues, specular map could be better but i really love how you redesign a few things, great hair, poses and final presentation! Congrats!

5th - Jaco - Catwoman
Beautiful model! I love this since the beginning of the challenge, was really hard to pick the first ones. Final presentation could be better! Cheers!

Special mentions
maddam - Old Link
Awesome redesign and rendering presentation! Maybe you could work more on the final pose and on hair textures and transition.

Lilith - Hit-Girl
Love this redesign, was really hard not to put on the first 5, but presentation could be a lot better and you should give more attention to her hair. Great work!

cg-sammu - Ms.Marvel
Great design, execution, poses and presentation! Maybe the original character doesn¡¯t help do much. Not so fan of her hair but its a really hard one. Congrats!

Intervain - The Magdalena
Love this model since the beginning of the challenge, too bad there are so many awesome entries, I wish I could put it on top 5. Congrats!

Guedin - Mr Freeze
Same for this one, great model! Too bad there are so many awesome entries, I wish I could put it on top 5. Congrats!

Judge's Top 5 Selection:

1st - Intervain - The Magdalena
This entry is not only a great sculpt and solid character, but it also really kept with the theme of the challenge. I am really impressed with the consistency of style and execution on this one. The stylized nature of it pushes it over the top for me.

2nd - Lilith - Hit-Girl
A not stylized, fully realized and a perfectly executed aged character. A lovely sculpt that totally gives me the "They should do this for a sequel" vibe. I would love to see what Kick ass himself might look like as a grown up in this universe. Best character in both the comic and movie, and one of my favorites of this contest.

3rd - jocz - Blind Batman
There is something so haunting about this one. I love the final renders and color choices. It¡¯s very dark but I can still see every detail. The addition of the little bat mo pods is outstanding. There is a broken feel about him, yet he's still out there fighting crime - Love it!

4th - Erigo - Lobo
This one really got me excited for the challenge when I saw the initial concepts and early sculpts. The end result is a really solid entry, though it has a few design choices that don't sit 100% right with me. I soooo wish he had kept the original hair and coat, it would be in the top 2(if not #1) if it had kept the vibe of the original concept art. Nevertheless, as it stands, a superb entry!

5th - maddam - Elder Link
I have trouble voting for this one for the simple fact of - I have never seen a real Zelda comic book... but the final execution is too solid for me not to give it kudos. I absolutely love the style, I love that it carries the age theme extremely well, and I love that it actually makes Link look like a bad ass, instead of a silly little boy. I would play this game in a heart beat. Had this been a solid comic book character it is without a doubt my #1 choice (I have a feeling someone is going to point out some obscure Nintendo power comic or something if they read this haha).

Honorable mentions
Tatarigamy - Abe Sapien

So freaking cute. Like muppet babies in the hellboy universe. I love the painted style of the beauty pass too.

SuperOstrich - Batboy
Great take on the theme, and from concept to final render it is pretty much perfect. I did not see this in the finals but it was in my top 10 for sure.

1st - ANiconoff - Leonardo
Totally solid in every area of the contest. This beautiful, vibrant painting was my favorite action-scene and went the extra mile of including multiple well-realized opponents and a terrific environment. The model-sheet was terrific and there were some great images in the process sheet. Great work all around and my top choice for this year's Comicon Challenge.

2nd - Cam - Marvin Rouge
This is a really lovely painting, beautifully rendered with great details. I really appreciate how Camille has taken the original cartoony starting point and really fleshed the character and details so completely. Nice process sheet, too.

3rd - chuvabak - Donatello
This was an utterly gorgeous rendering  - the lighting and texture are just fantastic - and a really solid modeling sheet. It would have been nice to see a more engaging pose with some personality to it.

4th - InSane :) - Iron man
This is a really fun concept; I love the character proportions and design! Great action scene and model sheet too.

5th - Rambozo - Lobo
An impressive amount of detail and thought went into every page of this entry. However, the model sheet page missed the mark by not providing useful views for creating a 3D model of this character.

Honorable mention
alexartist1980 - spidermen
Wonderful concept and painting, and although the model sheet was not very workable  and the process sheet lacked sketches.

Minoh Kim - 38 Studios - visit website

Minoh Kim was born in Pusan, South Korea and after many moves, ended up in San Diego, USA. Minoh developed a knack for drawing during these formative years, sketching battleships and fighter jets because his father was in the Navy. The scribbling paid off with an assistant gig in a comic book art studio, an amazing experience and the best three-year art class any teenager could have. Junior college added life drawing, design, Photoshop, and Illustrator classes to his mix. The game industry beckoned when a buddy working in video games got him a job as a tester, which led to a concept design job at SCEA (989 Studios) in 1997, which evolved into a permanent position on the team that eventually made The Mark of Kri for PS2. Minoh's talents next led him to Sony Online Entertainment, where he was primarily a creature maker on Star Wars Galaxies. A return to SCEA on their NBA series gave Minoh great insights into the creation of realistic humans, but the story now continues at 38 Studios....

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - alexartist1980
An extremely well executed final painting that perfectly captures a moment of tragedy. The amazing expression on his face shows a sense of animal desperation while also giving us a very human bit of sadness. And he seems like he just instinctively knows that he must help this child. Though his spider brain has almost certainly taken over most of his neural functions, leaving him looking a little brain dead. I've seen Spiderman with spider legs before, but the tarantula take is new to me and the awesome final painting make this one unique.

2nd - brian_h
Very cool final. Wonder Woman is a favorite of mine and this WW1ish patriotic take works very well. Kinda blending the Captain America origin with her a bit, but again, it works for her. If there was one thing I would change, it would be the styling of her sword. It just doesn't jive with the rest of the outfit. Altogether though, it is a great alternate take on an iconic character.

3rd - JBellio
This is fun. Felicia usually being overtly sensual and here she is playing shy. The final painting hits all of the right notes to pull this off. She has the nerd glasses, semi-confident smile due to her braces, alternate style teeny bopper clothing, goofy body proportions and a super awkward pose to top it off. In many ways this is NOT the Felicia that I know and love, but I can definitely see how she could have shed all of this in later years.

4th - InSane :)
I can almost hear Iron Man say "whipperschnappers." Good job on the final painting, His cartoony silhouette and Old Man pose are perfect.

5th - ANiconoff
I love this final painting! Action packed and very reminiscent of the old TMNT splash images. Leo's new tough guy body proportions and semi-realistic head make him a bit more gritty than I've seen before. Nice foot clan bots too.

Paul Richards - Vigil Games - www.autodestruct.com

Paul Richards [www.autodestruct.com] is a concept artist working at Austin's Vigil Games on a sequel to their flagship title, Darksiders. He keeps a collection of hair follicles from the studio's creative director, Joe Madureira, which he uses in dark art rituals. He also drew a bunch of stuff for Quake IV, but freely admits to liking comic books more than games. He thinks Clement Sauve, Eric Canete, Duncan Fegredo and Bengal are the absolute s#!t. Untouchable. His gateway drug into comics was TMNT (the Eastman and Laird run, thank you very much), which later gave way to a deep infatuation with Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita and a bunch of really high-end European comics he's never actually read in English. In his spare time, Paul enjoys name dropping, drawing boobs for his new blog Babe Lab, and impulse record shopping. YOu can see a sample of Paul's work in UDON's recently published book, The Art of Darksiders, alongside a slew of talented game developers.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - marat-ars - mario bastard
The Russians are killing it this year!  I try not to be too biased towards awesome painterly rendering but OH MY GOD LOOK AT THIS.  Brilliant lighting and technical execution aside, it's just a fun idea with loads to look at.  You can tell a lot of care went into Mario's mech suit design, and you know, dead dragons bubble-blowing babes don't hurt any.

2nd - griffinfly - older poison ivy
It takes serious guts to go the non-sexual route with a character like this and still wind up with some pretty sexy results. Such a stark standalone image of Batman's cowl being served up on a platter! Even the ortho is a work of art, and we all know how tedious and draining orthos can be.

3rd - rambozo - lobo
What strikes me about this is the minutiae...all those little bits and bobs, particularly the chainsaw/knife design. I know pictures should stand on their own, but I love that supplementary narrative Nicolas included. It looks/feels like a comic, and the spirit of Lobo is definitely there.

4th - chuvabak - MNT
There were two *very* strong TMNT entries this year. Must I choose only one? Chuvabak's stood out to me because of its waaaay chunkified, lumpified proportions. I haven't had such a strong reaction to a TMNT re-visioning since Michael Zulli's. Surreal! (And ever so slightly creepy!)

5th - Alexartist1980 - Spiderman
"End of mutation" takes Peter Parker's radioactive spider bite to its logical and grisly conclusion. Dig those sprouting mandibles!

Honorable mention
Cam - Marvin Rogue
The same reason I admire this is, lamentably, the same reason I list it sixth : It's based on a title Western audiences are not as familiar with. That shouldn't be a factor, of course, but I'd be wracked with guilt if I didn't admit to my own ignorance. The French do comics better than most, and it's a damn shame awareness of these beautiful Euro books is so low where I'm from. I want to look into this Donjon/Dungeon series now, if only so I can better understand Camille's take. I feel like, in an alternate universe where tits and spandex don't rule the newsstands, this entry would come in first across the board.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - InSane :) - Iron Man
Great composition, colors and rendering. The redesign is great and funny, and I love the posing - Tin man is maybe old but he is still kicking! The face of the granny in foreground could have been a bit more shadow but the overall piece works very well.

2nd - Le$hiY - Riddler
I like the redesign of the costume and the insanity look on his face. Great details everywhere. The batman/wayne sheet is a very nice touch. The Riddler loves creating and solving problems and batman is the biggest mystery in Gotham.

3rd - Cam - Marvin Rouge
The barbarian rabbit, I wasn't familiar with this character and had to look for some info. The redesign is great, he really looks like a mean barbarian. Very nice composition and style. I just wished the character was a bit more red and the volcano/smoke more lost in the fog.

4th - chuvabak - MNT
If only this character had been posed! I love the redesign, I like the colors, the volmes, the lights and the camera angle.

5th - bpsola - MESS WITH ME
Born evil! The lollypop, the flames and the dead bodies are really reflecting the state of mind of the joker. I like the dead burning bat (man) and the harley queen box. People say kids are angels, joker is the angel of chaos and this piece portrays it very well.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - Tommy Scott - Motoko Kusanagi
This one is my top choice overall. Very realistic, great execution and the turn around is ideal. Super extra points for doing it in color and designing an interesting costume that is still practical. Unrealistic impossible costumes just don't work in this day and age. You could use this for a live action or photo real CG version. Good work, very professional. Crits - her likeness in the rendering is not as Asian as the sketch. If I was the Art Director, I'd send it back for another hour on the face. Also, for a mature woman, I probably wouldn't go with the peek-a-boo cutout on the belly. BUT! The design of the costume and the totally professional orhto view still wins the field today.

2nd - Le$hiY - Edward Nigma
I'm liking the aged future version of Edward Nigma. Interesting look into his future - that he might become a crazed old gnomish looking guy. Good expression on his face. Points for the storytelling in the image - the stylized question mark staff, and the Indian Jones like warehouse full of puzzles and mysteries that he has collected. Some decent rendering on the painting too. Solid model sheet too. Crit - if you're interested - IMO he's a bit powerful looking for an old man who was never that athletic in the first place. He's not really using that cane for support, and he's got some stacked shoulders for an old guy. I think this could be really improved with a better reference of an aged man. They really have skinny arms and legs. He does look stooped in the turn around - but it is lacking some weight in the rendering.

3rd - alexartist1980 - Mutant Spiderman
I like the idea that Peter Parker might continue to mutate over time - works for me in the mythology of the story. I can see people liking the way it kind of mirrors Doc Oc. Could have gone even further with the spider parts - but this does preserve his comic book identity perfectly.

4th - baram892 - Abe Sapien - Male to Female Transgender
Switching genders is a classic comic book 'what if'. I like the webs under her arms, and of course the squid tentacles. I think this is a good alternate character design - you can completely see who it's supposed to be, but it's different enough to be interesting. Crits - the 3/4 view on the turn around isn't particularly convincing anatomically. And for me, she has kind of short legs. I find the painting of the action scene is too dark as well. But the character design is strong enough, so I didn¡¯t mind in the end.

5th - Cam - Old Red Marvin
Good two-for-one conversion here - both showing the character worn down by life (the peg leg) - and at the same time doing an upgrade from cartoony to rendered. A good rendition of what a CG film version might look like. Especially good lighting. I like the storytelling going on - props and secondary characters all work well. Minor crit - the 'hammock' or whatever that is behind him seems to interfere with his silhouette at the knee and elbow. I'd have omitted it, or pushed it back to a pale silhouette, so it doesn't seem to be so close to the plane of his body.

Judge's Top 5 Selection:
1st - Rambozo
Lobo is a really cool character in the comics, and he is represented very well here in this rendition. The final illustration, along with the two supporting sheets, are very professionally done. He did a great job with details and the character¡¯s emotions are very well portrayed. Maybe Lobo's character needed to be a little more hardcore, and Logo's mask/facial paint is lost on his old face. But it's really great work!

2nd - InSane :)
This IronMan entry is very charismatic! Good rendering and emotions! The transition between background, mid grown and forground is well done. There is no loss of focus from the main character - who we should be looking at.

3rd - marat-ars
Super Mario here is an interesting concept. It's a very professional and at the same time, epic illustration. It is a very cool art style, but this entry did not place 1st or 2nd because it is very difficult to know who the character is without the written title.

4th - griffinfly
This concept of old Poison Ivi is creative and stays true to the ideals of the Age of Legends challenge - create an aged or younger version of a comic hero/villain. The style is great, and there is a lot of personality and mood.

5th - Cam
